Users, Not Shareholders— the Honesty In Technology Foundation.

Technology used to serve the people who use it. Then it started serving quarterly earnings. We exist to reverse that — through advocacy, accountability, and software standards that put users first.

01 — The Problem

Every platform you love is on the same conveyor belt.

There's a word for it now — enshittification — and it follows a predictable, three-act script. Once you see the pattern, you can't unsee it.

Act I

Be good to users

The platform is generous. Search results are honest, feeds show what you asked for, prices are fair. Users flood in — and get locked in.

Act II

Squeeze users for business customers

Value shifts to advertisers and sellers. Ads crowd out results, algorithms bury what you follow, fees creep in. You stay, because everyone's here.

Act III

Squeeze everyone for shareholders

Users and business customers alike are harvested. What remains barely works — but the stock chart looks great, for a while. Then it collapses.

This isn't inevitable. It's a set of choices — enabled by lock-in, weak competition, and boards that answer only to the stock price. Different choices are possible. We intend to force them.

03 — About Us

Who we are.

The Honesty In Technology Foundation is a nonprofit founded by engineers, designers, and researchers who spent years inside the platforms we now hold to account. We watched good products get worse by design — and decided the fix wasn't another startup, but an institution with no shareholders to answer to.

We build open-source tools that make honest technology practical, publish audits that make dishonest technology visible, and work with regulators to make the difference matter. Everything we make is public. Everything we take is disclosed. Our charter binds us to users — permanently.

Do you know how to build, design, or deploy software?

Then you already have the skills to build a better future for everyone. Come do the best work of your career — for the people who use it, not the people who trade it.
